Underdeveloped nations face endemic problems, including corruption, malnutrition and scarce medical resources. With assistance from wealthier countries and aid organizations, these areas are sometimes introduced to modern technologies that are designed to further socioeconomic progress and higher standards of living. Indeed, modern technologies may greatly benefit underdeveloped areas in terms of improving health and enlightening the people with new information. However, there exists the danger that the people do not carefully manage resources and revenue resulting from the technologies--thus, resulting in harm to the area.

Modern technologies especially benefit underdeveloped areas in terms of health. For instance, new agricultural methods have helped make farming more efficient---having the effect of feeding more people, expanding opportunities for exporting, and bringing in more revenue to the people. The use of toilets and indoor plumbing dramatically reduces incidences of gastrointestinal diseases and early childhood deaths. Furthermore, the widespread use of the cellular phone has allowed people to contact each other more readily and share new information. Internet is not yet prevalent in underdeveloped areas but its use in the future will allow people to learn about other areas of the world and bring new expectations and ideas.

While modern technologies may be a sort of boom, there exists potential downsides from the resulting revenue and increased resources. For example, a corrupt government may abuse its power and use new money to enrich those in power rather than on investing on projects for the needy people. The promise of revenue also may result in environmental depredation; industries will neglect the natural environment in order to increase profits. This has been a problem in countries with mineral reserves and other natural resources. While underdeveloped countries may have regulations protecting the environment, there are no methods of enforcement, such as fines or imprisonment.

Modern technologies designed to improve health will benefit the people in improving living standards. However, technologies aimed to increase revenue and resources may add harm along with benefits. It is important that the people are given the knowledge to manage the effects of modern technologies. They must be taught about any potential damage that may affect the natural environment, as well as its implications. The government must also be accountable for revenue and not misuse public resources---however, this is said easier than done. People in undeveloped areas, out of necessity, think first about monetary gains and survival due to scarce resources. Thus, it is difficult for them to ponder "peripheral" matters such as the environment and ethical considerations.

Those in wealthier countries should continue to assist underdeveloped nations by introducing modern technologies and new ideas. These developments could substantially increase quality of life and revenues for struggling families. However, it is important to take into account any potential harm that modern technologies may also pose. In particular, those in underdeveloped nations need to be educated about how to use technologies wisely and effectively manage resulting revenues and resources. Indeed, modern technology along with essential foundational knowledge may help people rise from poverty and raise standards of living.
